Summary: A black-and-white handheld video recording of the E1 Festival, 1973, filmed by the Basement Project, from the streets in Wapping to a field in Stepney. The E1 Festival was a community-run event that took place throughout the 1970s on vacant land in Stepney, East London. Originally set up to raise money for the Junior Football League, it was a weekend long event of music, performing arts, stalls, and activities for people of all ages.
Title number: 21160
LSA ID: LSA/27856
Description: The video cuts rapidly between a few outdoor scenes: children playing drums on a field, a motorbike on the street, a marching band with drum players and flutists marching down the street with trucks behind them, passing by the Three Swedish Crowns Pub in Wapping, then walking through Prusom Street. The video frequently cuts to static with unstable images.
Aerial shots reveal tower blocks and a group of people on a field, dotted like ants with a great crowd of attendees. We see clips of festival games, such as bumper cars, a hoop-throwing and a ball-throwing game. In a series of short interview clips, we see a young man interviewing various attendees about their festival experience. One middle-aged man speaks of hearing about the festival through action groups in the local community, expressing his solidarity against developers in the East End. Another man says he has been at the festival since 9’o’clock in the morning, another woman speaks of winning a prize the previous year. Performances include comedy and a gig by an indie-folk band called ‘Amethyst’.
