The Crocodile on the Bus and other stories
MPEG-4 Colour Sound 2025 30:47
Summary: The Crocodile on the Bus is the second part of a Southwark Council Neighbourhood Funded project with the aim of capturing the memories of the long-term residents of the Elephant and Castle area of South London during a period of rapid re-development.
Title number: 23060
LSA ID: LSA/30325
Description: In conversation with local writer and educator, Lynda Waterhouse, five neighbours Marian (95), John (73), George (73), Kathleen (98) and Connie (98) recount aspects of their lives and community going as far back as the 1920s. As the stories and laughter flow, many fascinating details come to light, recalling different times and ways of life including the many shops that used to be on London Road, the experience of going to The Trocadero cinema, first jobs and creature comforts!
An original score by Neil Brand and rare photographs of the Elephant, many taken by Marian’s father, a keen amateur photographer from 1920 to the 1960s, illustrate these wonderful stories.
This project is a reminder of the need to take time to note the everyday details of life and to share memories before they are lost forever.
