Description: Beloved Bermondsey is a short documentary about a community going through change. Teenagers, long-time locals, and newer arrivals talk honestly about what Bermondsey means to them, what regeneration might bring, and what holds the community together.

00:06 – [subtitled throughout] teenagers standing on housing block landing talk about their connection with nature and birds and how the migration of people from different cultures into the country is needed (interrupted by man shouting and swearing from a nearby flat).

01:00 – Two women pensioners (Mary Murdoch and Karen Tull) in their garden talk about children inside all day playing games and the lack of conkers in the streets as the dustmen sweep them up. They talk about playing conkers 01:20 and in their flat sitting together they talk about playing marbles. One woman starts to throw the marbles up to catch them and the other lady does the same and one falls inside her clothing causing them both laugh.

02:24 – general views of Saint Saviour’s Dock, boats on the river, tunnel. Local man (Philip Poleon) talks about how life must have been in Bermondsey during Charles Dickens’ time recalling the play Oliver Twist where people would have been hawking goods in pubs or underground or in markets.

02:49 – general views of Local man (Philip Poleon) in the Blue Market on Southwark Park Road walking , V/O visiting markets and how they have changed and best markets now “revolve around food”.

03:06 – Den the Pie Man by his stall in Blue market talks about his love of Bermondsey and what makes it special; his pie and mash stall and its tradition. General views of people eating.

03:18 – Teenagers talk about the redevelopment in Bermondsey and exploring what that means. Den says he has seen huge change in the area; people coming into Britain and local people started to leave. General views of Den walking the landing of a housing block and standing looking. Den and Dan shake hands and greet and hug. Dan talks about interacting people with and how he likes Bermondsey and how it helps your mental health.

04:13 – Den points out mural of Russell Dryden, well known local Bermondsey man and fishmonger “always doing things for the community” and encouraging positivity.

04:30 – Costa Rican women dressing hair and preparing for show. V/O woman talks about representing her country in London through her traditional dance. General views of women dancing in Blue market.

04:51 – Teenage girl talks about not wanting the personality of Bermondsey to change or be forgotten. Den says that they can gentrify Bermondsey but Millwall (fans, football club) will still occupy pubs, eat pie and mash and go to the cafes and that cannot be taken away.

05:36 – Close up of Local man (Philip Poleon) talks about playing reggae outside one of the “biggest Millwall pubs” that was encouraged by Russell Dryden’s positivity.
